ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING ( ELL )

At GIM, we are proud of our culturally and linguistically diverse community. The student body comprises over 60 different nationalities and the language profiles of some of our learners are rich and complex, requiring individualised support to cope with the English-based curriculum.

We offer English Language Learning support classes for all our students. Your child will be assessed during the admissions process to ascertain their current level of English and you will be advised if they require additional language support.

Our ELL programme focuses on instruction in the areas of grammar, vocabulary and language development across listening, speaking, writing and reading skills through “pull-out” and “push-in” ELL classes. Additional charges will apply.

English Language Proficiency Assessment
  • Early Years
  • Children entering in Early Years are not formally assessed prior to enrolment. After joining the English-speaking environment, the Head of Early Years may suggest for a student to get extra support. An ELL teacher will step in to the classroom to intervene and support.

  • Primary Years
  • Students entering Year 1 through to Year 6 are required to sit the GL assessment (CAT4). The results determine whether a student needs English Language Learning (ELL) intervention to access the curriculum which is taught in English.

Should the GL assessment determine that the student needs ELL intervention, the classroom teacher is informed. With an eye on the English proficiency level in listening, reading, speaking and writing, the classroom teacher further assesses the student using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and provide corresponding bands of competencies in each skill.

If it is evidenced that the student is on band C and below, he/she will be placed in one of two stages of the ELL Immersive Programme. Participation in the ELL programme is compulsory. ELL fees are not included in the tuition fees and will be billed separately.

  • Secondary Years (Years 7-9)

Students entering Year 6 through to Year 9 are required to sit the GL assessment (CAT4 and PTE). The results determine whether a student needs English Language Learning (ELL) intervention to access the curriculum which is taught in English.

Should the GL assessment determine that the student needs ELL intervention, the English-subject teacher is informed. With an eye on the English proficiency level in listening, reading, speaking and writing, the English teacher further assesses the student using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and provide corresponding bands of competencies in each skill.

If it is evidenced that the student is on band C and below, other subject teachers are consulted to further understand if the student is able to access the different syllabi. The student will, then, be placed in one of two stages of the ELL Immersive Programme.

Participation in the ELL programme is compulsory. ELL fees are not included in the tuition fees and will be billed separately.

Year 10 and 11 students might also be required to participate in ELL booster classes as part of their after-school extra-curricular activities. This is so that they can maintain and constantly improve their level of English language proficiency. Participation in the after-school ELL booster classes is compulsory should the school deem it necessary for the student.
